Up until the last couple of years, golf for me was mainly just a side hobby; something that was fun, but I never really took too seriously or devoted any time to improving my game, and I would only watch the final round of the majors. I grew up watching golf with my grandfather, who has played the game for about 60 years. Despite his love of golf, I never got into it as a kid growing up.
As many people my age can probably say, Tiger Woods bursting onto the Tour in the late 90’s helped open my eye more to the game. As he started his dominance in the early 2000’s, I found myself watching a lot and, of course, rooting for him. My very first round of golf was at age 24 at some random course near Morgantown, WV when I was a senior in college. I took a few more years before golf would start to get a hold of me, first by just going to the driving range with some friends to hit balls. My father had played a little bit with friends and for work, and since it had been years since
he had last played, he let me have his custom-fit set of clubs that were perfect for my height.
As time went on, I started playing more as more of my friends got into the game also. However, these past 18mos have been a true game-changer for me, as something inside clicked and golf suddenly has become my passion and quickly moved up the ranks as my favorite sport to play.
I’m at the point now where I am watching way-too-much Golf Channel (to the annoyance of my girlfriend), reading Golf Digest, always searching for tips to improve my game, and discussing the game with friends and others online. Two years ago, I was happy if I was breaking 100; now, if I shoot over 95 I am disappointed. I’m working with a local golf pro for a few lessons a month, and practicing a couple times a week. My lowest round is an 85 at South Riding Golf Course two years ago, and I hope to break that this year. I also hope to make my very first eagle. Since my hand-me-down clubs were about 10-years-old, I decided to splurge and get an entirely new set. Read about the details and my thoughts of them under my equipment section.
