If you are anything like me, your golf towel is the last thing you think of before heading out for a round of golf; as a matter of fact my towel, before receiving the Frogger Amphibian towel, was given to me by my high school golf team 13 years ago!! I mean really what do you need a golf towel for besides wiping off some old dirt on your clubs or cleaning a ball because their was no ball washer on that hole? If you thought any of that, we were in the same boat, then I received the Frogger Amphibian Golf Towel and my views of the importance of the golf towel changed forever.
Performance and Design
The Amphibian is two 28″ x 14″ towels in one, built on a three layer system, the interior of the towel is made of a bamboo terry cloth; Frogger says this material absorbs up to three times as much water as cotton and dries three times as fast. The outer layer is made of a Cotton Jacquard which stays soft and dries quickly, so if you use it to dry your hands it won’t stay wet for long. In between these two layers is a waterproof membrane that allows both towels to do individual jobs with out hindering one another. The inside layer is designed to have water added, so you can easily clean your clubs and be ready for your next shot; team the Amphibian up with the Frogger Brush Pro (review coming soon) and the grooves on your club will be ready for the toughest of shots. The exterior layer is designed to stay dry and soft, allowing you to dry off your grips on a humid day, dry your hands or dry a golf ball after it has been washed. The brilliance of this towel is it is reversible, so on a rainy day you simply reverse the towel, now the Bamboo interior is the exterior of the towel and will absorb the rain and you can use it to wash mud off your ball. The cotton exterior then becomes the interior allowing you to dry your grips off quickly and effortlessly, for maximum performance of each shot!
From Frogger’s Website
“The Amphibian Towel is so ground-breaking, so different, you’ll hang your other towels out to dry. The secret is a moisture-proof barrier inside that ensures the wet side stays wet, and the dry side stays dry, rain or shine. Clubs stay cleaner and keep their bite for more backspin, more control and more distance.”
The first day I used the Amphibian was a scorching 90+ degree day on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and anyone who knows this area knows when the heat comes so does the heavy humidity; so this towel was put to the test from day one. Before getting to the first tee, I soaked the inside Bamboo layer of the towel, thinking I would have to add water again but I never did; the interior layer stayed damp the entire round. I found if I cleaned my club with the Interior layer, right after I hit my shot before I put my club away, the dirt and grass came off very easily using the towel. The biggest help to me with the Amphibian was the outside layer, I have often thought of using two gloves as the humidity makes the grips and my hands very slick and I often concentrate more on my grip then I do on my entire swing; with the outside cotton layer, I simply dried the grip and my hands off before going to the tee box or before I hit my shot and I never had an issue with grip. The one thing you can tell when you pick up the towel is the quality of it, Frogger used top notch fabrics to make this towel and it shows as the towel if very heavy and durable. One tip I would recommend is to put the towel on the side of your bag that sits to the outside of the cart (if you are riding not walking); as the towel is bigger than most towels and is easier to use if it is off to the side and not pressed up against another bag on the same cart.
There really aren’t many products you can buy in the golf realm for $30 that will drastically improve your golf game, but I think the Amphibian by Frogger is definitely one of those products, I would recommend giving it a try. I tested the standard black towel but it comes in Blue, Orange and Pink (Supports Breast Cancer) as well; which should match most golf bags in some shape or form. The Amphibian won best new product at the PGA merchandise show in 2009 for a reason, this towel is revolutionary.
