Weekend Recap

FedEx St. Jude Classic
Harris English Gets First-Career Win at FedEx St. Jude Classic

Harris English (-12) earned his first PGA Tour win on Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Classic at TPC Southwind in Memphis, TN. English held the lead for the first two rounds, relinquished it to rookie Shawn Stefani in round three, then had an up-and-down final round to secure the victory: 37 out/32 in, with 6 birdies and 5 bogeys to finish 1-under for the day. Despite having the third round lead (in which he overcame a quadruple-bogey on the 11th hole Saturday to shoot a 4-under 66), Stefani had a tough final round as he shot +6/76, finishing six shots back overall. Harris English’s front 9 in the final round didn’t seem to be the start of a champion, as he went out in 37, but he rebounded on the back nine finishing with four birdies and only one bogey. Scott Stallings (-10) was four shots off the lead to begin the day, but a hot start – going out in 31 – combined with Stefani’s & English’s early miscues allowed him to build a three shot lead. However, an approach shot finding the water on 15 led to a double bogey, and another bogey on 18 took him out of the lead for good, and he finished two shots behind English. Never to be fully out of a tournament, Phil Mickelson made his usual charge starting five shots off the lead and finishing 3-under for the day/-10 for the tournament. Phil also had the shot of the day on 18, one that at the time he thought he needed to hole-out in order to tie English. His 167yd approach landed inches from the pin, and rolled just by, good enough for a tap-in birdie. See the highlight here–18-in-round-4-of-fedex-st–jude-classic.html

US Open Tee Times
First & Second Round Pairings Announced

The top 6 in the world golf rankings have been paired together for the first two rounds, broken up in two groups of three, of course. World numbers 1, 2, and 3 – Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Adam Scott – will play together (1:14pm), while numbers 4, 5, and 6 – Matt Kuchar, Justin Rose, and Brandt Snedeker – will be grouped as a threesome (1:36pm). The traditional grouping for the US Open puts the previous year’s US and British Open champions (Webb Simpson and Ernie Els, respectively) with the US Amateur champion (Steven Fox); those three will tee off at 1:36pm. Being a major championship, marquee pairings are part of the norm, but this one has some great “themed” matchups (that I took to naming myself):
- “Bombers” group: Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Nicolas Colsaerts (7:00am)
- “Best Friends” group: Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley, Steve Stricker (7:11am)
- “South African” group: Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Tim Clark (7:33am)
- “Former World #1s” group: Luke Donald; Lee Westwood; Martin Kaymer (12:52pm)
- “Over 40 & Still Going” group: David Toms; Darren Clarke; Jose Maria-Olazabal (12:30pm)

It will be a great tournament as usual, and these pairings should provide some entertaining golf for the first two days.

Champions Tour
David Frost Edges Fred Couples to Win Regions Tradition

David Frost (-16) won his first Champions Tour major on Sunday at the Regions Tradition, held at Shoal Creek in Alabama. Frost held off World Golf Hall of Famer Fred Couples (-15), as they and the rest of the field dealt with heavy rain and a lightning delay of more than an hour on Sunday. The win is Frost’s second of the season, his previous coming at the Toshiba Classic in March. Couples was looking to win back-to-back majors on the Champions Tour: he sat out last month’s Senior PGA Championship, but won the Senior British Open in 2012.

LPGA Championship

Inbee Park (-5) wins LPGA Championship; 4th Victory of the Year

Despite a difficult round and some strong finishes by two others, Inbee Park won the Wegman’s LPGA Championship at Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford, NY on Sunday in a three hole playoff over Catriona Matthew. The tournament was Park’s to lose, and she almost let it happen, shooting a 3-over 75 including a bogey on 18. Matthew (-5) and Suzann Pettersen (-4) played well, and each challenged Park during Sunday’s final round, shooting 4-under and 7-under respectively. Inbee has now won both of the majors on the LPGA tour this year, and extended her hold of being the #1 ranked player in the world.
