Patrick Reed wins first PGA Tour event in two-hole playoff
Having blown a three-shot lead on the back nine, Patrick Reed (-14) defeated Jordan Spieth on the second playoff hole to earn his first PGA Tour win. It was the third straight top-10 finish for Reed, who moved up to 22nd in the FedEx Cup standings after netting 500 points for the victory. Reed almost gave the tournament to Spieth on the second playoff hole, where he sent his tee shot heading towards the trees and out of bounds. Noting that his heart sank when he was originally given the sign that his ball was indeed OB, he was about to tee up a provisional when a few people ran into the fairway to give him the ‘all clear’ signal instead. The ball turned out to be rested on some TV wires, twigs, and dirt and he was able to have a look, albeit through a small window of some trees, at the green. Pulling out his 7-iron, he hit a clean shot to within seven feet of the pin, where he sank his birdie putt after Spieth missed his ten-footer to seal the victory.
Had Spieth won, he would have become the youngest player to win two events in the modern era of the PGA Tour. Zach Johnson had another solid finish, placing tied for fourth at (-11).
With the Wyndham Championship being the final event of the PGA Tour season, some players on the bubble tried to bump their way into the top-125, who all automatically qualify for The Barclay’s this week, unfortunately none were successful.
