Recently we have been asked to review some more cost effective alternatives for Iron Sets, then the major brands we normally review. Being as we are trying to reach the “Average Guy Golfer” we thought this was a great idea, and will be posting some equipment that works great, yet has an affordable price tag. The Wilson Staff – Ci7 Irons can be found online or at some different sporting good stores for about $250 for the set, which is well below pricing for the major brands. These clubs have a great look to them, and the first thing you will notice is the recognizable Wilson read and silver diamond shape shield. The irons which come 4-GW have a mid-sized head, give the club the look of a forged tour iron with the forgiveness of a game improvement Oversized Iron. The product we tested, came with the True Temper TX-105 steel shaft and the weighting on the irons and shaft were great; when you make true contact on this club you don’t even feel the contact, which isn’t always the case in more affordable iron sets. The way Wilson design the clubs the weight distribution helps create a high moment of impact (MOI) to launch the ball high off the club face. The bottom of the club has a thinner top line, in my opinion making the club look sleeker but always making shots out of the rough a little easier as there is less of club for the grass to catch and turn. This club is made for people who need forgiveness and will help them be more consistent in their game; however believe it or not this club offers functionality for better players and will allow them to work the ball.
- Mid-Sized head for control and forgiveness
- Launches the ball high off the club face
- Very forgiving for inconsistent players
- Comes out of the box and not many customized options if you’d rather have 5-SW or another combination of clubs
- The standard grip is a hard rubber grip which I find difficult to grip properly
Overall these clubs have a great price, and will help the moderate to beginning golfer. The wilson name is a trusted name in the sport, and the price of this set should really make them something you try; they match up to the higher priced more named brand clubs and a fraction of the cost.
